We have finally arrived in Zambia! The travel was very, very long but I am so excited to finally be here! As we were walking out of the airport, so many people were waiting by the exit for friends and family and the atmosphere was immediately welcoming. Driving to the city of Lusaka from the airport was like entering a whole new world. Once we got into the city I immediately noticed that there were people everywhere! Everyone was out and about walking around, selling goods, and singing alongside the road. I noticed a lot of small shops and many, many trees! There were so much more beautiful plants than I was expecting! I also noticed that driving in Lusaka takes a lot of courage and skill! It reminded me of New York City driving with much congestion and traffic. When we finally arrived at our apartments, they were far beyond my expectations. The apartments look like Spanish style houses you would see in Arizona or New Mexico with full lawns, patios, and beautiful trees. The entire area is gated and there’s even a pool!! After getting settled into our apartments, we headed into town to buy some groceries. There are many shopping markets/stores and we headed into one that was familiar from my trip to Ireland last summer. We also exchanged our American money for Zambian Kwacha and learned that 1 dollar is equivalent to about 6.50 kwacha. While shopping, it was difficult to make the conversion in my head but I’m sure I will get used to it! I also found that products are cheaper here than in America. After shopping for groceries, we headed back the apartments and met up with Dr. Shandomo’s nephew Kunda. He told us that tomorrow morning he will take us to a traditional market!
