Third times a charm, right? I never would’ve imagined that I would be embarking on a third International Professional Development Schools opportunity, but here I am preparing for what will expectedly be the most life-changing experience I will ever endure not only as an educator, but as an avid traveler. Most of all, I have my hardworking and supportive parents to thank because none of this would have been possible without them- I could never fully express how grateful I am!
Ironically enough, I have never felt more prepared for traveling to Africa, which I think I have my experience from IPDS Dominican Republic to thank for. Previously being immersed into impoverished life, allowed for me to take a hard look at who I was as an educator (what is my teaching philosophy?), and as an individual (what kind of life do I want to live?) I’ve realized through these international exposures, that I feel most purposeful and happy while providing quality education to students who live among more of an impoverished community. I can only imagine how much more enlarged my heart will grow while in Africa. I try not to have any expectations while traveling because it is essential to be as flexible as possible, however, I do hope to gain more knowledge in terms of pedagogical approaches in the classrooms in Zambia, behavior management strategies practiced, and overall the ins and outs of their education there. I am hoping to focal point even further my teaching philosophy, especially right before student teaching. Although I can already feel this will be the hardest goodbye, I look forward to my growth and memories gained. Follow me on this whimsical journey- I promise you won’t regret it!
